The Analysis of Human Expression

Every human being expresses themselves physically and vocally in a very precise unique way. How do we define that expression, how do we reproduce it, how does it define who they are?
For much of his life, Rudolf Laban explored the potential of human expression utilising the theories on archetypes developed by C.G. Jung. Shortly before his death he turned over his work to the dancer Yat Malmgren hoping he could complete it. Together with his partner Christopher Fettes, Yat Malmgren succeeded in that objective and a fully formed theory accompanied with exercises was developed, thus providing us with the unique resource that we now enjoy today.

Why do two characters say the same thing and we understand something completely different? Why is HOW we say something more significant than WHAT we say – what we all feel intuitively in a more or less specific manner can suddenly be defined and named. Individual energies can be isolated, specifically rehearsed and used – a unique instrument for actors.

The theory of movement-psychology has not let me go since my first encounter. Were it not for hesitating to use big words I would probably have to call it “Lebensaufgabe”. Be this as it may, my passion for this work has grown with every year.
